Veronica Anne Salinas
Veronica Anne Salinas is an interdisciplinary artist, writer, educator, and Deep Listener based in Chicago, IL. Her practice explores artistic research through sound, listening practices, writing, video, technology, and performance. Through these mediums, she explores concepts of perceptual shifts, amplifying marginalized voices, and the poetics of space, environments, ecologies, and time. As a dedicated listener and teaching artist, Veronica collaborates with the Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology, Chicago Public Schools, Girls Rock Camp, and Campbient to nurture the growth of listening as social practice. Her passion for Deep Listening emerged during her time working with mentor David Dove and Nameless Sound in Houston, Texas. She studied at the Center for Deep Listening at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and holds an MFA in Sound from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She performs under her own name and as the collaborative eco-ambient project called WEATHERING. WEATHERING is an eco-ambient music project that uses weather data, field recordings, synthesizers, soundscapes, objects, instruments, movement, and voice to create eco-hallucinations, bringing the outside atmosphere in. WEATHERING has forthcoming releases in 2024 from Sawyer Spaces and Rural Situationisms. Veronica’s writing has been featured in Latina Outsiders: Remaking Latina Identity (Routledge 2019), Decoder Magazine, Oxford American, the Center for Deep Listening, and the Farmhouse Art Collective. Her artistic work has been featured at the Ragdale Foundation, New Music Gathering, Experimental Sound Studio, Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain, Omaha Under the Radar Festival, Museum for Contemporary Art Chicago, Gene Siskel Theatre, Center for Engaged Research and Collaborative Learning at Rice University, Nameless Sound, Sullivan Galleries, Vermont Studio Center, Lawndale Art Center, Sala Diaz, Cities and Memory, and many others.
