Joaquin Segura
Joaquin Segura is a visual artist who lives and works in Mexico City. His artistic practice, ranging between installation, intervention, photography, and video, is centered around meditations on the phenomenology of history, power, and truth, as well as on an extended engagement with notions such as objecthood, sociopolitical microclimates, asymmetrical history, and ideology in the contemporary world. Some of the most relevant concerns in his recent production revolve around the nature of power and its self-regulating mechanisms, identity conformation processes in highly unstable environments, and the ontological significance of dissent and failure, with a particular emphasis on its materiality. Formally diverse and extremely personal, Segura’s work strives to reflect on the fissure, understood from an encompassing perspective in an intimate relationship with the ideas of crisis and contemporaneity, frequently formalized through a deep resignification of key historical events and the contradictions that shape the present moment.
His work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Active since the early 2000s, Segura is widely recognized as one of the leading Mexican artists of his generation, exhibiting in spaces that include Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros, Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, La Panadería, and Museo Tamayo in Mexico City, along with El Museo del Barrio, Anthology Film Archives, White Box and apexart (New York), LAXART, MoLAA (Los Angeles) Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid), National Center for Contemporary Art (Moscow), the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, TX, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Denver, CO and the National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne). His work has been extensively reviewed & featured in international art publications & major outlets such as Artforum, Flash Art, Adbusters, Art Papers, Código, Art Nexus, Discipline, Celeste, El País & PBS NewsHour, among many others. In 2008/09, Segura was an artist-in-residence at the International Studio & Curatorial Program, New York, NY, and at the 18th Street Arts Center, Santa Monica, CA. Between 2012 and 2017, he undertook artistic residencies and research stays at Hangar –Centre de Producció i Recerca d‘Arts Visuals (Barcelona), MeetFactory – International Center of Contemporary Art (Prague), Impakt Foundation (Utrecht), Casa Wabi (Oaxaca), and Seoul Art Space_Geumcheon (Seoul). In 2018, he’s appointed as a fellow to the National System of Artistic Creators / FONCA (Mexico).
